Midnight's Last Ride

Additional information: This sculpture by artist Earl W. Bascom, sculpted in 1983, depicts rodeo's most famous bucking horse, Midnight, sending Rodeo Hall of Fame cowboy Turk Greenough high into the air. This historic ride took place in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1933 at the Frontier Days rodeo, after which Midnight was officially retired from rodeo life. Midnight was famous for kicking high, making it almost impossible for a cowboy to ride. Only a few cowboys ever successfully rode Midnight to the whistle.
Midnight was raised on the Door Key Ranch a few miles up river from the Bascom Ranch in Alberta Canada. The artist first met Turk Greenough in 1926 at the Calgary Stampede and competed against him at rodeos for many years. But they always remained good friends.
